The Future of Retail is, if not Bright, Using Those Vintage-style Light Bulbs

Well, maybe. Retail is the era of omnipresent online shopping needs to have some extra experiential spice of its own.

And it’s no secret that retail’s “biggest season” is upon us. Much digital ink is being spent on analysis as folks try and find trends. I’m a fan of “Small Business Saturday,” but and would note:

  1. If you search for “Small Business Saturday” and your city or locality, there might be a page about stores in your neck of the woods, and
  2. I’m 99% sure said small businesses would not mind if you shop there more than one Saturday a year.

In fact it was considering how small businesses are actively working to be experiences and potentially third places that made me think of this article by Joe Pinsker for The Atlantic from the Before Times about how retailers are trying to change how we view retail stores — as well as what we do at stores. This includes not referring to “stores” at much. It’s an interesting article and something to consider both for this impending consumer crazy weekend as well as the rest of the season (and if you seek out some small businesses, I maintain you will be rewarded).
