What does the fox say? Die Hard is a Christmas movie

I mean, yes, they’re biased, but 20th Century Fox knows their back catalog of movies and they know Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Behold!

Admit it, you’ll watch this before you break open the myrrh.

Sorry Cinema Scrooges: Die Hard is a Christmas Movie

Now I have a Christmas ornament: ho, ho, ho…

It has come to my attention that some people out there on the Interwebs still cling to the notion that Die Hard, the celebrated action film starring Bruce Willis, is not a Christmas movie.

Look, Gremlins counts as a Christmas movie, Edward Scissorhands counts as a Christmas movie, and  –Lord help us all– Santa Claus Conquers the Martians counts as a Christmas movie. So yes, “the Christmas episode” of action movies does indeed count as a Christmas movie.

Consider the following:

  • The protagonist is there because he’s trying to re-unite with his estranged wife at Christmastime.
  • The antagonists are specifically there at the Christmas party because the Christmas party helps their plans.
  • “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (aka “Twas the Night Before Christmas”) is recited with alternate verses.
  • Halls, people, and pretty much everything gets decked.
  • Santa hats are used for great comedic effect.
  • The end of the film reunites the protagonist with his family, whom he now values more than ever, and they spend Christmas together.

Friends, there are many pressing questions about the holiday season from what the deal is with the Feast of Seven Fishes to the order to light Advent candles. Die Hard‘s place in the Christmas movie canon should not be one of them. Watch it with Yuletide joy… perhaps after the younger ones are in bed (there are some violent bits, after all). Twinkies are appropriate.

Yippee ki yay to all and to all a good night!

But, you know, maybe make sure to wear some shoes. Trust us on this.

Wish List for Santa, Updated

Here at the home stretch, I figured it was a good time to feature Brian Gordon and his gift of validation to parents everywhere, Fowl Language.

Don’t forget the bonus panel! And if you enjoy his work, consider supporting him and his ducklings via Patreon.

Welcome Yule!
(and I hope you all get some sleep)

Caroling with the Bard, kinda

Who doesn’t like caroling? And who doesn’t William Shakespeare?

Well, quite a few people in both camps, actually… but let them stew in their camps like Achilles in his tent.

If you, like me, think that those are two great tastes that go great together, Mya Gosling, the creator of Good Tickle Brain, gets you.

More importantly, she has devised Shakespearean Christmas Carols not once, nor twice,  but thrice, and, um tetralogically?

Really, it’s like all the Comedy of Errors where all the errors are songs and — okay, it’s not like that.

So, it’s more like all the history plays, which when you watch them in sequence and — okay, it’s not like that, either.

Look, it’s a bunch of takes on Shakespeare plays or characters which you can sing about with tunes may already know because, y’know, Christmas carols. If you don’t find yourself singing along to at least one involuntarily, you’re just not feeling the season. (or not into Christmas carols or Shakespeare as noted above).

And if you’re really into singing them, consider supporting Gosling, who like many web comic artists, is using Patreon.

If you’ll excuse me, I’m off to contemplate more rhymes with ‘Crispin.’

The True Meaning of XKCDmas

Last year, I went with videos. In this year’s run-up to everyone’s favorite solstice, I figured I’d go with comics.

So let’s kick off the week with one of my favorite online comics, XKCD, where he explores the reason for the season, XKCD-style.

Not the Reindeer Games I Expected…

Look, I might as well end out a whole week of video posts with one more celebrating the season. So, here ya go:

Enjoy, be merry, and maybe ask someone if you’d had too much egg nog before you don some antlers. Just in case.

And (Muppet) Mayhem Ensues, Holiday Edition

In case you just weren’t into the Star Trek holiday videos from yesterday, perhaps you’d enjoy the marriage of one of my favorite holiday tunes (and not just because it can be repurposed by Lovecraft fans) and my favorite pop culturally-impacting puppets (and not just because they’re part of one of my favorite TV series).

Okay, it’s not as good as their take on the song everyone knows to headbang to, but it’s still fun. Plus, if you like Muppets, they have one of the better film versions of  A Christmas Carol.

And for when your holiday season gets dark…

No sooner did I decide to do a post about Picard making it so for the holidays, I came across this little video about everyone’s favorite re-purposed Cardassian space station.

It truly reminds one of all that is good and bad in DS9.

It just isn’t the holiday season until you make it so…

Every family has their own holiday traditions. Ours includes Revels. Many friends watch their favorite Christmas movie. Now, in the Internet age, many Star Trek fans have this:

Enjoy… or engage… or otherwise, y’know, make it so.
