Various and Sundry

Margarete Steiff and the Rise of Stuffed Animals

I did a post the other day about Girl Scout cookies because the holidays count as overall cookie season and perhaps some people might cry foul. True, those people might not be much fun at holiday parties, but they have a point.

Stuffed animals, however, deserve some consideration during holiday season because if you’ve never given the gift of a stuffed animal to a kid or been a kid receiving “the best stuffie ever,” well… you’re really not going to be fun at holiday parties. Do you need to hug a stuffie?

For the rest of you, there’s this fun 6-ish minute piece on Margarete Steiff, someone who can’t be said to be the inventor of stuffed animals, but certainly someone who helped their commercial popularity… and the various turns of her life to make her company a purveyor of fine stuffed animals is pretty darn interesting as well. (The company still exists, by the way).

And if you’re ever in the position to gift just the right stuffie to a little kid (possibly under the guise of Santa), it’s the best. Lambs’ wool optional.
