Motivation to create –and breaking out of perceived writing blocks and creative ruts– feels like an evergreen problem. In fact, there’s enough books and articles and videos about such things that I believe it’s fair to say creative folks find themselves in different shaped ruts so that one solution might not fit all.
BUT, in case this video is the one that helps you today, spend 15 minutes with filmmaker Luc Forsyth as he explains his experience dealing with, and getting out of, creative ruts:
And yes, some of you might realize the solution involves simply doing. Shoot the photos. Make the short film. Make another. Do a dozen sketches. Do a dozen more. Don’t obsess about “not getting the hands right.” You don’t need to show anyone. Heck, you can burn some of it (please don’t do this to objects that will cause really toxic fumes or in poorly ventilated areas).
Yes, simply doing is not something that no one has ever said before. But as I alluded above, my impression is people need different methods and structures and “on ramps” to doing. And it might change because you’re in a different type of rut. So if the video above helps inspire you to take action, then carpe that creative diem.
