As the seven or nine longtime readers of this blog will recall, I love a good movie trailer, which I define as a trailer that gives you that emotional tone of the story and type or story you’ll be going on with said film… without revealing too much of the story. Indeed, I would say the central question such a trailer should ask is “Look at this! Can’t you imagine what kind of journey you’ll go on with this film?”
Nowadays, those trailers are usually “teaser trailers” and, yes, some teaser trailers give you the faintest whiff of the IP and nothing else, many still take their role of enticement and intrigue seriously. Enter the latest offering from stop-action animation studio Laika, whose work I’ve enjoyed for some time. I’d say they rock it:
Considering all the AI posts I’ve been doing, it strikes me that this style of animation is probably heretical to those who want to automate everything. For me, I find the craft and care that goes into movies like these endlessly fascinating — and I’m sure I’m not alone because Laika has released what will probably be several behind-the-scenes videos (as they’ve revealed before).
It’s exquisitely inefficient. May they keep doing it for some time.
