Various and Sundry

AI and Data Centers and YOU

Continuing my series of posts about the current crop of AI and machine learning –especially the post a few Wednesdays ago about what we the people or we the government of the people might do about AI— here’s something quite topical: Data Centers!

Amid the general backlash against AI, the very NIMBY backlash about data centers keeps popping up in news pieces… probably because of the overwhelming push tech titans are making to build new data centers.

And that’s the premise in the video below: the drive to build new data centers is so strong, that managing to stop a data center build in one locality means it will likely be build in another locality that does not put its NIMBY foot down. And so the question becomes how the data center gets built for what desired outcomes… and things get altogether messier. Because that means we the people need to get more involved and in a different way. Not saying we need to become one of the funnel people, but here’s where I like the conversation video below.

The algorithm gods have served up Elle Cordova videos to me for a while and she’s always struck me as seriously thoughtful even when she’s been seriously silly. Steph Speirs, meanwhile, is an entrepreneur focused on addressing climate change… and to get to some of the outcomes she wants, she goes into a good deal of detail and nuance that should get mental wheels turning.

Runs a brisk 40 minutes.
