It’s a Bronze Blogiversary… with Salt!

Eight years ago today, I relaunched a personal website not really seen since the previous millennium. I’ll leave it to readers to decide if it’s a little bit good or a little bit bad and in what proportion. But eight years does appear to be the Bronze Anniversary or, if you’re indecently British, the Salt Anniversary?!? I’m guessing that latter one dates back to the Danelaw.

Howard the Duck isn’t the only character introduced during the “Bronze Age of Comics,” but he’s certainly one of the saltiest.

As with previous versions of this blogiversary post, I’ll be looking at the posts that were popular over the past year and other stats worthy of preserving in salt (or bronzing).

Star Trek

It’s no surprise that my posts related to ranking every episode of every Star Trek series topped the list of total traffic to the site. I expect this to continue for some time as they appear to have appealed to some search algorithms. This year’s rankings are:

  1. Every Episode of Star Trek, the original series, Ranked (1)
  2. Every Episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Ranked (4)
  3. Every Episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Ranked (3)
  4. Every Episode of Star Trek: Voyager, Ranked (2)
  5. Every Episode of Every Star Trek Series, Ranked: The Whole Enchilada (5)
  6. Every Episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, Ranked (6)
  7. Every Episode of Star Trek, the animated series, Ranked (7)
  8. Every Episode of Star Trek: Discovery, Ranked

The Original Series (TOS) has maintained its lead, month-to-month, since last year. The Next Generation (TNG) has warped up to the number 2 spot in only the past few months, which I’m chalking up to season three of Star Trek: Picard. This much-hyped “final season” that just started streaming last month reunites much of the Next Generation cast and I’m sure more than a few TNG fan has done a nostalgia-inspired search that led them here.

You’ll see their rankings last year in parenthesis. I won’t be surprised if Voyager goes up in the ranks again once the documentary comes out.

I’m also guessing the newer Trek series will inch up as I actually catch up in ranking the newer seasons (and whole new series!). A lot has debuted since I created these lists in 2020.

Most Visited Posts (apart from Trek)

Apart from Star Trek, the eight most visited posts in the past year (whether they were from this year or no) were:

  1. Film Genre Popularity Over the Decades (2022)
  2. Fewer Lightning Strikes and More Slow Burns (2021)
  3. Schedule Management: The 0-50-100 Method for Tasks (2016)
  4. Schedule Management: Exceptions to the 0-50-100 Method (2016)
  5. Fast. Cheap. Good. Pick Two. (2022)
  6. TCM Remembers, 2022 (2022)
  7. Cue Rockin’ Blogiversary Music (2021)
  8. The Surprising Profit Center for Airlines (2022)

A lot of project management and process improvement this year. Not a bad thing –and something I should really write more about (I used to teach internal classes in schedule management and risk management and enjoy sharing what I’ve learned). And, naturally, I’m always up for more film posts.

Posts I’d Like to Get More Views

I can’t complain about my Trek posts getting plenty of views. I don’t mind the project/process management posts’ popularity either. But I see occasional spikes of popularity on some posts I’d like to see get yet more hits… and a few posts I just want to get more love. Here are eight more or less in order.

I’ve been thinking about actors and casting a lot in the past year, David Warner being a character actor whose performances I’ve gone back to for decades. Just about all of these posts are in the Top 100 from the past year (which, considering the site have over 700 posts, isn’t bad), but the Sherlock Holmes one has spiked a couple times, which always makes me smile (I do hope the author of said ranking now has her doctorate). And finally, I gotta give writing self-promo a shoutout: I mean, writing is the primary reason this blog is here. If all goes well, I’ll have another few bits of promotion this time next year… and probably more Trek.

It’s a Wool-Gathering Blogiversary!

Seven years ago on this date, I finally got around to relaunching a site on ye olde world wide web, which as anniversaries go is sometimes termed the ‘wool’ or ‘copper’ anniversary.

So, sheep who work in a copper mine are ideal?

As with previous versions of this blogiversary post, I’ll be looking at the posts that were popular over the past year and other stats worthy of wool-gathering.

Star Trek

Once again, my posts related to ranking every episode of every Star Trek series topped the list of total traffic to the site. This was not a surprise. What has changed from last year has been that the Whole Enchilada ranking is no longer the most visited. The hits now go:

  1. Every Episode of Star Trek, the original series, Ranked
  2. Every Episode of Star Trek: Voyager, Ranked
  3. Every Episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Ranked
  4. Every Episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Ranked
  5. (Big drop) Every Episode of Every Star Trek Series, Ranked: The Whole Enchilada
  6. Every Episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, Ranked
  7. Every Episode of Star Trek, the animated series, Ranked

Note that Voyager continues in second place. In fact, it was number one for most of the year. As I discovered when I originally posted the rankings, love for that series is far stronger than its general rep.

I’m also reminded that I really need to update some of the existing Trek series, which are blossoming.

Most Visited Posts (apart from Trek)

Other than Star Trek, the seven most visited posts in the past year (whether they were from this year or no) were:

  1. Fewer Lightning Strikes and More Slow Burns (2021)
  2. Cue Rockin’ Blogiversary Music (2021)
  3. Schedule Management: The 0-50-100 Method for Tasks (2016)
  4. You Too Can Die of Dysentery! (2021)
  5. Prepare for Brood X! (2021)
  6. My 50 Favorite Films, 2020 Edition (2020)
  7. 2020 Additions to the National Film Registry (2020)

Note that, by a wide margin, the highest number of views outside of the Star Trek rankings was “A Viewing Guide for Star Trek: Enterprise,” but since that’s clearly also Trek, I skipped it.

I really don’t understand the popularity of the first entry, which is a great article for sure, but its title doesn’t seem like anything favored by an algorithm. Ah well. The schedule management post has been popular for years… and if that helps people better manage their projects, all the better (it really does cut through a lot of Dilbert-esque bull). I am glad that most of the posts in the top non-Trek seven are from the past year. I mean, that means I’m posting relevant things, right? Maybe?

Posts I’d Like to Get More Views

It’s hard to compete with Star Trek, a pop culture powerhouse that’s been around for over 50 years, so I strongly suspect, unless I unwittingly tap into some niche topic made timely by the zeitgeist, that Star Trek posts will remain the biggest source of traffic. Still, when I looked over all the posts I made over the past year, there’s a few that I would have liked getting in the top seven (sans Trek):

For people my generation, Beverly Cleary was her own pop culture powerhouse and the interviews I linked were great. Farscape, likewise, is a show I love, and the article I talked about uncovered what I think may be one of the subconscious reasons I like it. Intellectual property and Disney is a topic I don’t think I’ll tire of, nor the success or lack thereof of creative folk. Finally, I always like thoughtful pieces about storytelling and pieces that warn writers of bungus often need to be amplified.

So there it is. Another year in the can… or the rear-view mirror… or lost in a metaphorical 404. See you in another year, many dozens of posts and, if all goes well, a couple hundred script pages.

Cue Rockin’ Blogiversary Music

Wait! How is this Star Trek-themed?

It’s been six years since I re-launched my personal website, which evidently is the “iron” anniversary, hence good ol’ shellhead above. As I mentioned in last year’s blogiversary post, I was going to try and make this more annual and — especially because last year felt like at least five years — it felt right to do a post.

So here are some highlights and personal favorites.

Star Trek

My series Crisis of Infinite Star Treks lasted the first five years of the blog. As it happened, there was also a Star Trek-related project that I worked on over that same five years. It came to fruition thanks to the pandemic — and to quote a certain Klingon, it was glorious.

Every Episode of Every Star Trek Series, Ranked

As I kind of expected, the traffic I get to this post and its related pages dwarfs just about everything else on the site. It’s like people are interested in Star Trek or something!

The pages that had the comments (with spoilers and snark) got far more hits than the pages with only titles — and of those, the “Whole Enchilada” got far and away the most traffic. Breaking it down by show, these are the pages that got the most traffic:

  1. Star Trek: The Next Generation
  2. Star Trek: Voyager
  3. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
  4. Star Trek (the original series)
  5. Star Trek: Enterprise
  6. Star Trek: Discovery
  7. Star Trek: Picard
  8. Star Trek (the animated series)
  9. Star Trek: Short Treks

Mind you, I don’t think this tells me anything more than which series Trek fans most want to see some guy on the Internet’s ranking of — which reminds me: the fact that Voyager is right there at the top doesn’t surprise me. Based on conversations on Reddit, some of my fellow Trekkers love that show and, just like Enterprise, if you haven’t checked it out there’s a whole slew of episodes that are really good.

In fact, just as I’ve done a “Viewing Guide for Enterprise,” I will be doing a “Viewing Guide for Voyager” and some of the others later this year (if all goes well).

Theater and Creativity Amid Coronavirus

Many of my creative colleagues are depend on being physically on sets and on stages for their ducats, so I’ve been tracking how those industries are doing and posting about them this past year:

And more COVID

While I didn’t want to focus on the pandemic endlessly, I did find it cathartic to share some articles and videos and events related to it, so I created a tag, COVID Craziness, which has a little bit of crossover to theater coverage above. There’s plenty of joy and introspection.

Check it out when it seems right. I suspect for some people it’s too soon, but other’s it’s just right.

Most Visited Posts (apart from Trek)

Apart from the Star Trek ranking, in honor of this, the sixth blogiversary, these are the top six visited posts from the year (not necessarily written in the past year):

  1. Schedule Management: The 0-50-100 Method for Tasks
  2. The Nightmare that is 2020, Expressed in Sugar
  3. My 50 Favorite Films, 2020 Edition
  4. The Worst Derelict Spaceships to Board
  5. Voices Behind the Scenes of Atlantis: The Lost Empire
  6. The Differences between a Policy, Process, Procedure, and Work Instruction

So, it could be that Trek-loving project managers who also watch a lot of films are my niche.

Whatever the case, thanks for visiting and reading, and here’s to another year of maybe (just maybe) useful information.

Wouldja Believe? It’s a Five-Year Blogiversary!

Obligatory if somewhat dated pop culture reference.

Back on March 1st, 2015, I re-entered the web world with a personal website, something I really hadn’t had since the 90s, which in Internet terms is ancient history.

Perhaps because March 1st doesn’t correspond with any other anniversaries in my life, I keep on meaning to do an annual retrospective about posts and such on the blog, but keep on forgetting.

This year, however, I made sure to set a reminder for myself. As with any eponymous blog, this post is mainly a self-indulgence, but for anyone who wants to go back and check some of the posts (over 400!), here’s an accounting of the “greatest hits” and some of the “deep cuts.”

Star Trek

Of course, these posts topped the list. My series, Crisis of Infinite Star Treks, lasted almost the full five years. There were long and short entries and ones that I thought were better than others. The three that seemed to best represent the series are:

Writing

I was pleasantly surprised to see how many of my posts about writing got so many views. Writing and trying to do more work as a writer is near and dear to me… and frankly, one of the reasons I’m online anyway.

Granted, most of the posts are mainly linking to or commenting on articles or resources I found online, but it’s been great to share what I know. Some of the most read have been:

Integrally linked to many of these articles are the posts which talk more about motivation (one of them is up there). That was led to several posts about finding purpose, meaning, and motivation… often explicitly disconnected from a paycheck. These were a lot of fun to write (and probably helped me work through some thoughts):

Personal Favorites… and other odds and ends

As indicated above, part of the fun of a blog is the ability to indulge your whims and flights of fancy, often without a care for deadlines or the editorial rigor you yourself might expect from a magazine article.

Many of the posts grow out of articles I read online that I want to expand on, which include.

Less fun, but very cathartic, has been writing remembrances

Finally, there’s a few that I enjoyed writing just for fun and I fully expect to add to that category in the next few years:

So for those of you who have popped over to this blog, thank you. I hope you’ve enjoyed the links and the articles and the geekery.

I’ll probably do another of these sooner than five years hence.

Holy Bleep, It’s a Blogiversary!

The new BjornMunson.com debuted March 1st last year.

Also, the first anniversary is paper. What good is paper to a web log?

I feel XKCD would have a good answer to this.
